Healing Adoption Trauma: My Journey from Depression to Purpose:
In August 2020, I experienced a loss that plunged me into a deep, dark depression. My adopted mother passed away, and with her, I felt like I lost a part of myself. But it wasn’t a loss I could easily define. It was a mixture of emotions that I struggled to understand.
My relationship with my adopted mother was complex, to say the least. It was not one I treasured. My childhood was tough, devoid of the simple, nurturing love most children experience. I never felt loved or cared for. Hugs were a foreign concept, as were the words “I love you.” Instead, I was constantly criticized. No matter what I did, it was never good enough. I felt used, not loved.
But where was this overwhelming sadness coming from? What exactly was I grieving?
At the age of 19, I became completely independent. I embarked on a journey of self-reliance, studying full-time for my degree while also working a full-time job to survive. I fought hard for my life; I never gave up on anything. Looking back, I am immensely proud of myself.
Not long after she passed away, I started seeing a bereavement counsellor. However, after a few sessions, she told me something unexpected: she could no longer help me. Instead, she suggested I see a childhood trauma specialist. My first thought was, “I’m so messed up that even my therapist gave up on me.” But I didn’t give up on myself. I kept going. I did so much therapy work and healed my inner child. This is a work in progress, I will always work on myself.
With the help of therapy, I began to understand the turmoil within me. I realized that beneath the layers of grief lay a deep-seated anger. I was angry at everything I was promised by my adopted mother, yet never received. Promises of being loved as her own daughter, promises of being treated as a gift – none of which were fulfilled.
I was angry that she left this world without ever showing remorse, regret, or extending an apology.
Through therapy, meditation, journaling, and EFT Tapping, I began to unravel the knots of emotion that had bound me for so long. Each session of Reiki felt like a step toward healing, a step toward understanding.
Today, I am grateful for having felt those deep emotions. They led me on a journey of self-discovery and healing. These tools not only healed me but also showed me the path to my purpose.
Adoption Trauma: The Unseen Wounds
Adoption trauma is a silent, often overlooked pain that can affect individuals long into adulthood. The loss of biological connection, coupled with unmet emotional needs, can lead to a deep sense of grief and confusion. It’s important to note that adoption trauma isn’t just about the child that was adopted; the adopting or fostering parents may also go through their own set of emotional challenges. I acknowledge this and extend my help to them as well.
Understanding Depression: A Journey of Self-Discovery
Depression is not always easy to define. It can manifest in many ways, and its roots can be buried deep within our subconscious. In my case, it took the loss of my adopted mother to realize the depth of my own depression. It was a wake-up call, a profound moment of self-realization that forced me to confront the emotional turmoil I had been carrying for so long. Through therapy and introspection, I began to unravel the layers of sadness, guilt, and unresolved trauma that had been weighing me down. Each step of this journey brought me closer to understanding the complexities of my own mind and the profound impact of my past experiences on my mental health. It was a journey of self-discovery, one that ultimately led me to the path of healing and purpose.
Unravelling the Emotions: Therapy and Healing
Therapy became my lifeline, guiding me through the maze of my emotions. Each session felt like a gentle unraveling of the knots that had gripped my heart for so long. Through meditation, journaling, and EFT Tapping, I found solace in the quiet moments of self-reflection. Each breath brought me closer to understanding and forgiveness.
If you’re feeling lost or overwhelmed, therapy can be your guiding light. It’s a safe space where you can explore your emotions without judgment. Through therapy, Reiki, and EFT, I learned to release the weight of my past and embrace a brighter future. You don’t have to navigate your struggles alone.
The Power of Forgiveness: Liberating Yourself from Hurt
The act that hurt or offended you might always be with you. But working on forgiveness can lessen that act’s grip on you. It can help free you from the control of the person who harmed you. Sometimes, forgiveness might even lead to feelings of understanding, empathy, and compassion for the one who hurt you. As I journeyed through therapy and healing, I discovered the transformative power of forgiveness. It wasn’t about excusing the actions of others or forgetting the pain they caused. Instead, it was about releasing the burden of resentment and anger that I carried within me. Forgiveness allowed me to reclaim my power and find peace within myself.
The Path to Purpose: Finding Peace and Helping Others
Today, I am grateful for having felt those deep emotions. They led me on a journey of self-discovery and healing. These tools not only healed me but also showed me the path to my purpose.
My purpose? To help others overcome trauma, depression, and anxiety. To guide them towards finding their inner peace so that they, too, can live a peaceful life. My soul’s purpose is dedicated to guiding others on their journey to discover inner peace. I am committed to assisting individuals in navigating the path towards serenity, self-awareness, and emotional balance. It is my heartfelt mission to provide support and insights that empower others to cultivate a sense of tranquillity within themselves, allowing them to lead more fulfilling and harmonious lives.
By sharing my story and extending a helping hand to those in need, I hope to shed light on the silent struggles many face in the aftermath of adoption trauma.
